Smoked Sweet Potatoes
Smoked Sweet Potatoes are a simple, savory, and absolutely sensational side dish! Perfect for any spread, any time of year, these smoked beauties will have you scraping out every last bite! 🍠
I love an easy side dish, and smoked sweet potatoes really take the cake when it comes to simplicity. Simple seasonings and a couple of hours on the smoker are all it takes to make perfectly tender, sweet, and savory sweet potatoes everyone will love. It’s really that easy!
Plus, sweet potatoes are just so versatile. Their subtle, sweet notes and hearty nature make them a good pairing with almost meat, legumes, and veggies. You can also add toppings when serving to make them lean, more savory, or sweet, depending on your preferences.
How Long to Smoke Sweet Potatoes at 225°F?
Plan on 1½-2 hours to smoke sweet potatoes at 225°F (110℃). Since smokers and cook times can vary, depending on potato size and how often you open the smoker, start checking them after an hour. When they’re tender enough to pierce them easily with a fork or reach an internal temperature of 205-212℉ (95-100℃), they’re finished cooking. 👌
Recipe Ingredients
- Sweet Potatoes – I usually smoke 3-4 sweet potatoes at once for my family, but you can smoke as many sweet potatoes as comfortably fit in your smoker if you need to feed a crowd.
- Seasonings – Olive oil, salt, and pepper are all you need to get your sweet potatoes smoking.
- Optional Toppings – You can certainly get creative here, but I like to top my sweet potatoes with diced green onions, butter, and sour cream.
How to Smoke Sweet Potatoes
Getting Everything Together
- Preheat your pellet grill to 225°F (107°C).
- Prep – Scrub, rinse, and pat the sweet potatoes dry.
- Place them on foil, drizzle with olive oil, and then generously season with salt and pepper.
Smoke the Sweet Potatoes
- Load Smoker – Place the potatoes directly on the smoker or pellet grill and close the lid.
- Smoke for about 1½-2 hours or until sweet potatoes become tender. They’ll pierce easily with a fork or sharp knife. Rotate the potatoes halfway through the estimated smoking time for even cooking. Once the potatoes are tender, remove them from the smoker.
Plate the Smoked Sweet Potatoes
- Slice each sweet potato down the middle, being careful not to cut it all the way through.
- Plate – Gently squeeze both ends of the potato to open the middle. Fluff the inside of the potato gently with a fork to loosen the flesh and make it easier to eat.
- Serve immediately as-is or top with butter, green onions, or any other desired toppings.
Recipe Variations
- Amp up the smokiness. For an even smokier flavor, pierce the potato with a fork all over. That allows the smoky notes to penetrate the potato’s flesh better.
- Enhance the sweetness. Make a sweet cinnamon maple butter or cinnamon brown sugar mixture to top your smoked potatoes for a dessert-like finish. 🤤
- Make it a main course. You can top these smoked sweet potatoes with something hearty to make them a whole meal. Top them with taco meat and cheese or shredded chicken, sauteed onions, and bell pepper.
- Gourmet sweet potatoes. Blue cheese, walnuts, and honey offer a more elegant take on this side dish.
Tips and Tricks
- In a pinch, you could smoke these at 350℉ (180℃), and they will cook in under an hour. The downside is that you lose a lot of the smoky flavor because of the shorter cooking time.
- Use apple wood or another fruit wood for a more subtle smoky flavor.
- Throw a few strips of bacon on the smoker and pull them off when they’re crisp. Chop them up, then top your smoked sweet potatoes with fresh bacon bits. Delish! 😋
Make-Ahead Instructions
You can make these sweet potatoes a day or two ahead of time and keep them in the fridge in an airtight container. You could also freeze them for up to three months. Thaw them out in the refrigerator the night before you reheat and serve them.
Serving and Storage Instructions
Serve this deliciousness piping hot and loaded with all your favorite toppings.
Refrigerate leftover smoked sweet potatoes in an airtight container for 3-5 days. To reheat smoked sweet potatoes, simply pop them in the microwave on high for 30-second pulses. However, I prefer baking them in a 350℉ (180℃) air fryer or oven until heated through.
What Goes With Smoked Sweet Potatoes
These seriously go with everything! I like making an entire meal on the smoker. Serve sweet potatoes with smoked pork chops or pellet-grilled chicken thighs.
If you want another veggie on the menu, smoked asparagus or smoked Brussels sprouts are two fantastic options. 🙌
