Avocado Burger Served in a Wooden Platter

Avocado Burger

Just when I thought there was nothing on the planet better than a juicy, beefy burger hot off the grill, I tried an avocado burger. There's just something about the combination of the savory beef and the smooth, fresh avocado atop a warm hamburger bun that will bring a tear of joy to your eye.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Fork, or whisk
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • Grill or stovetop pan
  • spatula
  • bowl, for mixing avocado

Ingredients

Mashed Avocado

  • 1 medium avocado
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons cilantro, optional
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1-2 tablespoons minced onion

The Burger Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ onion, minced
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1-2 tablespoons burger seasoning

Instructions

Mashed Avocado

  • Cut the avocados in half and twist the two sides in opposite directions to remove the pits.
  • Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh and place it in a medium bowl.
  • Add the lemon juice, and mash the avocados with a fork until you achieve your desired consistency.
  • Finally, add the cilantro, garlic, and onion (add an optional dash of hot sauce to the bowl if you’re feeling adventurous). Mix well to fully combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

The Hamburgers

  • Clean the grill grates thoroughly and lightly oil them to prevent the burgers from sticking to the grill. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. (around 375-400°F). If you’re using a charcoal grill, ensure the coals are evenly lit and glowing.
  • Add the ground beef, garlic, and minced onions to a large bowl.
  • In a smaller bowl, mix together breadcrumbs, egg, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Add the mixed ingredients to the bowl of ground beef, along with the salt, pepper, and burger seasoning, and lightly mix until fully combined.
  • Divide the mixture into 4- 6 equal parts and form into patties. Use your thumb to a slight depression in the center of each patty to prevent the burgers from puffing up on the grill.
  • Place patties on the preheated grill over direct heat. Let the patty cook for at least 3 to 4 minutes before giving it a first flip, giving the meat time to sear. Otherwise, the patty may start to fall apart.
  • Remove the patties from the grill when they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
  • Assemble your avocado burger by spreading a generous amount of the mashed avocado mixture on each bun, either at the bottom or the top, before or after adding the patty. I have tried it all, and it all works just fine.
  • Finally, add additional toppings, such as lettuce, tomato slices, cheese, or condiments of your choice.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can customize the burger seasoning by using your favorite spices and herbs. Experiment with different combinations to suit your taste.
  • Work with cold ground beef to prevent the fat from melting before cooking. This helps retain the juiciness of the burgers.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of minced garlic and onions in both the burger mixture and mashed avocado to suit your preference for their flavors.
  • If you don't have dry bread crumbs on hand, you can use crushed crackers or panko breadcrumbs as a substitute.
  • If you don't have a grill or stovetop pan, you can also cook the burgers in the oven. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the patties on a lined baking sheet for about 15-20 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking process.
