Equipment

  • Grill

Ingredients

  • 4 firm apples, (Crisp varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (or oil)
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

Prep the Grill and Apples

  • Clean the grill grates thoroughly and oil them to prevent the apples from sticking. I usually dip a folded paper towel in cooking oil and use tongs to rub it across the grates.
  • Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (around 375-400°F/190-205℃). If you're using a charcoal grill, ensure the coals are evenly lit and glowing.
  • Remove any stickers from the apples and wash them. Place them on the cutting board, remove the stems (if any), and core them.
  • Cut each apple into thick slices or wedges. If using small apples, split them in half.
  • Combine the water and lemon juice in a bowl. This mixture will help prevent the apples from browning.
  • Place apple slices into the lemon-water mixture so they are submerged in water. This step helps keep the apples from turning brown.
  • In a small bowl, add the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, allspice, and salt. Mix well to ensure an even distribution of the ingredients. Adjust spices to taste.
  • Remove apple slices from the lemon water and thoroughly pat dry with paper towels.
  • Brush with melted butter and quickly sprinkle the cinnamon mixture over both sides of the apples until evenly coated.

Grill Them

  • Place the apple slices directly on the grill grates. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side or until they develop nice grill marks and soften slightly. Pay attention to the apples, as they may become mushy and lose their juice.
  • Remove the grilled apple slices from the grill and place them on a serving platter or individual plates.
  • Serve the grilled apples warm with ice cream, and drizzle with balsamic glaze or onion for a decadent treat. You can also enjoy them on their own as a healthy snack.

Notes

  • Be sure to slice your apples fairly thick - I'd say at least ½-inch thick. If they are thinner, they can get soft before the nice grill marks appear, becoming mushy and hard to handle.
  • Dip a folded paper towel in cooking oil and rub it across the grates with tongs for non-stick grilling. This is my oiling method of choice whenever I grill.
  • Keep a close eye on the apples as they grill. They cook quickly, and if you get distracted, they can turn to mush and start to lose their juice.
  • Adjust the sweetness: If you prefer sweeter grilled apples, you can increase the amount of brown sugar and use sweeter apples like Fuji and Honey crisp.
  • Please remember that the nutritional information is a rough estimate and can vary significantly based on the products used in the recipe.
